Caríssimos irmãos e irmãs, 

Neste quarto domingo do tempo comum, a partir das leituras que nos são apresentadas, somos convidados a rever o nosso bilhete de identidade cristão. Não aquele que nos é dado logo após o nosso batismo, mas a identidade do nosso ser e do nosso viver como cristãos.

Ouvimos com frequência a expressão "humilde" e nos questionamos: por que tanta insistência em humildade? Porque é a qualidade de quem age com simplicidade, característica de um cristão que sabe assumir suas responsabilidades, sem arrogância, prepotência ou soberba. Pois é um desafio para quem vive o contrário e para quem ainda não cultivou essa qualidade.

Lembrai-vos de que Moisés subiu ao monte e lhe foram entregues os mandamentos. Hoje Jesus subiu ao monte e começou a ensinar a nova lei: ser pobre, manso, misericordioso, puro de coração e promotor de paz. Esta lei não contradiz nada, mas é o normal da vivência de cada um de nós. Sabemos que Jesus, ao ensinar, não impõe a ninguém, mas ele revela o caminho da felicidade, por isso, hoje repetidas vezes ouvimos: felizes são. Talvez a questão que possamos levantar seja: o que significa 'feliz'? E por que começa cada uma das oito bem-aventuranças com a palavra 'feliz'? Podemos dizer que ‘feliz’ significa estar contente, ou que os desejos foram concretizados. Mas na insistência de Jesus, feliz significa uma pessoa que está em condições de graça, que progride na graça de Deus e no caminho de Deus; isto é, estar para os outros e com os outros. Se assim o fizermos e agirmos, seremos felizes e bem-aventurados.

Que cada um de nós renove o seu bilhete de identidade cristã para gloriar-se no Senhor, vivendo e promovendo a nova lei que Jesus nos ensinou hoje, e que sigamos o caminho da felicidade, vivendo da graça de Deus.

Dear Brothers and sisters,

On this fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, based on the readings, we are invited to reflect on our Christian identity. Not the one given to us immediately after our baptism, but the identity of our being and living as Christians.

We often hear the word ‘humble’ and wonder: why is there so much emphasis on humility? It describes the quality of those who act with simplicity, typical of a Christian who understands how to take responsibility without arrogance, haughtiness, or pride. It poses a challenge for those who live the opposite way and for those who have not yet developed this trait.

Remember that Moses climbed the mountain and received the commandments. Today, Jesus ascended the mountain and began to teach the new law: to be poor, meek, merciful, pure of heart, and peacemakers. This law does not conflict with anything; it is the normal way of life for each of us. We know that Jesus, when teaching, does not impose anything on anyone but shows the path to happiness, which is why we hear today, repeatedly, "Blessed are." Perhaps the question we can ask is: what does “blessed” mean? And why does each of the eight beatitudes start with the word “blessed”? We might say that “blessed” means being happy, or that one's desires have been fulfilled. But in Jesus' view, being happy means being in a state of grace, progressing in God's grace and walking on God's path; that is, being there for others and with others. If we do this and act accordingly, we will find success.

May each of us renew our Christian identity to glorify the Lord, live by and promote the new law Jesus taught us today, and follow the path of happiness through God's grace.
