Caríssimos irmãos e irmãs,

Com a celebração da festa do Batismo do Senhor, encerramos o ciclo festivo do Natal. Esta celebração convida-nos a refletir sobre o dia do nosso batismo. Pode ser que um ou outro tenha esquecido; hoje pode ser um exercício para lembrar a nossa data de batismo. Pode ser que tenhamos sido batizados quando éramos bebês; por isso, não temos em conta o dia do nosso batismo.

Mas o certo é que a Igreja ensina que, quando somos batizados sem a mínima consciência, é responsabilidade dos pais e padrinhos ajudarem a criança a crescer na fé, dando os primeiros passos na doutrina cristã. Os pais e padrinhos têm a missão de ajudar os seus a perceberem que, pelo batismo, tornaram-se filhos de Deus e membros da Igreja.

Por aquilo que vamos testemunhando hoje, muitas velas acendidas no dia do batismo encontram-se apagadas, tudo pela forma como levamos a vida e assumimos o nosso compromisso batismal. Muitas vezes, os sacramentos têm sido banalizados devido ao secularismo. Já não celebramos os sacramentos muitas vezes pela fé, pelo que fazem na nossa vida. Para alguns, é questão de manter a tradição da família. Como sempre dizemos, todos nós fomos batizados na Igreja Católica, então todos os que nascerem na nossa família devem ser batizados na Igreja Católica. Até aqui, tudo bem; é um bom princípio. Mas a questão é como vivemos este sacramento depois de o receber?

Quando negas o teu batismo, negas a tua fé, a tua Igreja. E hoje, alguns, por causa da situação social e talvez de outras realidades do dia a dia, vemos como vão de igreja em igreja, recebendo vários batismos em cada igreja a que vão. Será que isto é fé? É sinal de um filho de Deus?

Reflitamos sobre as nossas crenças e firmezas quanto a quem acreditamos. Não tenhamos ilusões como palavras terapêuticas quando não há a parte espiritual, mas aprendamos com Jesus que, depois de ser batizado, abriram-se os céus e ouviu-se a voz do Pai: Este é o meu filho amado, escutai-o. Que mantenhamos o compromisso batismal de fazer parte da missão de Cristo, fazendo o bem e libertando os oprimidos.

A missão é para todos os batizados. Que as nossas atitudes positivas transformem o mundo e que o batismo nos faça novas criaturas neste mundo desafiador.

Dear brothers and sisters,

With the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we conclude the Christmas season. This celebration invites us to reflect on the day of our baptism. Some of us may have forgotten; today can be an opportunity to remember the date of our baptism. We may have been baptized as babies, so we do not remember the day of our baptism.

But the truth is that the Church teaches that when we are baptized without any awareness, it is the responsibility of parents and godparents to help the child grow in faith, taking the first steps in Christian doctrine. Parents and godparents have a mission to help their children realize that through baptism, they have become children of God and members of the Church.

From what we see today, many candles lit on the day of baptism are now extinguished, all because of how we live our lives and fulfill our baptismal commitment. Often, the sacraments have been trivialized by secularism. We no longer celebrate the sacraments regularly because of our faith or what they mean in our lives. For some, it's simply about maintaining family tradition. As we always say, we were all baptized in the Catholic Church, so everyone born into our family should be baptized there. So far, so good; it's a good principle. But the real question is, how do we live out this sacrament after receiving it?

When you reject your baptism, you reject your faith and your Church. Today, some people, because of their social circumstances and other everyday realities, move from church to church, receiving multiple baptisms at each one they visit. Is this genuine faith? Is it a sign of being a child of God?

Let us reflect on our beliefs and convictions about whom we trust. Let us not be fooled by comforting words without spiritual substance, but learn from Jesus that after he was baptized, the heavens opened and the voice of the Father was heard: "This is my beloved Son, listen to him." May we uphold our baptismal commitment to participate in Christ's mission, doing good and freeing the oppressed.

The mission is for all the baptized. May our positive attitudes change the world, and may baptism make us new creatures in this challenging world.
